Unseasonably warm temperatures will build across Western Montana and North Central Idaho this weekend, with widespread 70s and 80s expected, and some valleys pushing near 90 degrees by Tuesday. However, this early summer heat is masking a severe springtime hazard: freezing, fast-moving rivers.
Our waterways are currently swelling with peak mountain snowmelt. While the air feels like summer, water temperatures remain dangerously cold, hovering in the 40s and 50s. Plunging into water this cold triggers involuntary "cold-water shock," which causes immediate gasping and can paralyze the muscles of even the strongest swimmers in minutes. Furthermore, these high waters are moving much faster than they appear and carrying hidden debris like logs and branches just beneath the surface.
If you are recreating near the water this weekend, assume the river is colder and faster than it looks. Wear a properly fitted life jacket and keep children and pets far back from steep, slippery, or unstable riverbanks.
